Last month I had the pleasure of sitting on a "Social Media for Business" panel discussion with Louise Clements, the Director of Sales for Facebook Canada. She shared with me some of the latest data on Canadian Facebook users that I would like to pass on. The most staggering figure that I was presented with was that "16 million Canadians spend no less than 1 hour a day on Facebook". Wow Canada has a population 33,212,696~ [stats Canada July 2008]. That's an amazing 48.48% of Canadians in total. This is why they have been working on making fan pages more useful to business and brands. With that level of Canadians engaged daily on Facebook having a fanpage for your brand is more important than ever.
 
I am just going to post the statistics and will provide some analysis later this week.

In a recent Adage article, using data from the research firm Hitwise, t was reported that Facebook now accounts for more referral traffic to some sites than Google. Facebook now has a confirmed number of registered users in the range of 200 million. Social networking has grown a whopping 93 percent since 2006; the amount of time people spend communicating online has increased from 18 to 32 percent of their total online time.[1] The actions performed in Facebook are shifting as well; users spend a good portion of their time on the newly redesigned newsfeed page, where they can quickly scan for status updates and user-recommended videos, products, and  articles. Similar streams in Twitter and FriendFeed are also becoming powerful recommendation engines. Further, the low click-through rate of banners on social media sites is even further below the already shockingly low industry average of .01%-.02%. These low results are primarily due to the highly focused activity performed by users on social media sites, and also explain why media placement companies have bluntly told me, "Social media does not work for online advertising."

The numbers:
  • Last fall, it was reported that 40 hours a month are spent online by the average internet user in North America.[2]
  • Of those online, 75% are spending time in the social networking and social media space.[3]
  • The the industry attributes a .1%-.2% click though rate on most web banners and that number drops further on social networking activity.
  • Social networking has grown 93% since 2006.[1]
Now, let's look at some of my anecdotal social media link click-through activity. According to mrtweet.com, a Twitter user recommendation site, I post an average of 42 tweets a day. 28 percent of my posts contain links; that's about 12 links per day. I use Hootsuite to post links, as it enables me to measure the stats of those who actually click on the Hootsuite to post links, as it enables me to measure the stats of those who actually click on the links I post. Last week, I had a total of 1250 clicks[pretty graphs], either directly or through re-tweets[4], on 84 links. That gives me an average click-through rate of 7%. I have approximately 1200 followers, and there are hundreds of thousands of Twitter users with substantially more followers than me. With the growing number of Twitter users alone, recent rumours of the company's acquisition by Google make sense. I post about half the number of links on Facebook as I do on Twitter, but can't measure the click-throughs as Facebook currently lacks the requisite analytical tools. The total number of online social media users across the various platforms-Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, Del.icio.us., etc.-provide a clear indication of where consumers spend their time, and why it's important for companies and agencies to create content and campaigns that are viral-worthy.

So where does that leave the web banner? Should we abandon the staple that has given hope to so many web start-ups and sustained others? The answer is no; the web banner has its place in delivering brand presence and campaign messaging online. Perhaps if the web advertising industry had not hung its collective hat on CTR, this issue may not have seen so much back-peddling as there is today. The industry was so keen on proving its relevance in the web's early days that it differentiated itself from other mediums through the highly measurable CTR. Unfortunately, what wasn't considered were the lack of novelty and typically bad experiences users often associated with the click.

However, banners are still important in that we can track their impacts by measuring all customer impressions through comprehensive analytic tools. I believe it is all part of the mix, but the final destination of any campaign must be relevant and engaging enough to hold the attention of users, and contain content that will compel them to share it with others. Creative agencies play an important role in orchestrating compelling ad campaigns that customers can relate to, but ultimately, the method of directing viewers to those destinations is shifting from the once almighty banner ad, to the terrain of "the people's media."

I read an article calling Twitter the next Second Life! The article went on to discuss the wasted branding and marketing efforts that still lay waste on virtual islands of Second Life. Now that Second Life was no longer making the headlines of the various marketing rag as the "Next Big Thing". SL is a space that I do know first had having been involved with an effort to build an in world TELUS Mobility brand store in in back in 2006. Tami  Gillespie, the project lead, at TELUS informs me the store is still active in the community and that the residents still are after here for all the latest virtual hand sets that the real world TELUS sells.

Now, that got me thinking about how every new social networking site that comes online continues to erode and fragment the digital entertainment space like cable did in the late 80's and 90's. With every new social networking superstar there are the forgotten heros from days gone by. Remember Classmates.com [1995]Friendster [2002], MySpace.com [2003], and Orkut.com [2004 Now owned by Google] just to name a few. Ya I thought you might. You probably even have an old login or two for those sites that still works don’t you? So that said, are they actually forgotten or just left behind by the marketers and advertisers for all things shiny and new? The real fact is that Myspace is still the biggest in the US with 76 million unique visitors a month. It's odd with that type of high traffic why I have not had a client request a unique myspace campaign in at least three years isn't it? What impact and sway do those sites still have on brands and business? What are the collective numbers I wondered. Well the number of active users are actually still quite large and when you throw a new social network onto that pile like Facebook or Twitter, they really do start to add up. Marketers are in such a hurry to find the next thing that reaches critical mass that they quite often forget that there are many users that feel forgotten in the social networks of yore! 

So let's throw Twitter into the mix now and see where we are going with this in 2009. I don't think that Twitter will ever become a Myspace or a Facebook in relation to adopted users or complexity of interactions. In fact at the current growth rate it would take Twitter approximately 30 years to catchup to Facebook alone and that’s only if you were to lock in the current user base and not allow for further growth. Twitter however continues to grow and become more and more integrated with other online sites and services and may impact brand and business in ways we can only imagine. Social networking is what “search” was in the 90’s Yahoo, Excite and Lycos knew they could get the eyeballs but it took Google and Overture to figure out the business model that worked. It’ll come and currently it looks like the two likely ones to do so are Facebook and Twitter.

There are pundants that say blogs, myspace and podcasts and many other social networking site and services are dead. They are not and although they may have flat lined out in growth. The various services retain a large number of users and continue to fragment the attention and eyeballs of millions. As each new service comes online and gains in popularity the fragmentation continues. In fact Friendster, long thought dead, has 61 million unique visitors a month globally. Second life had 1,445,444 users logged in in the last 30 days and Twitter has about 4-5 million active users. You start to add that up and you are talking about a lot of people not watching tv, listening to the radio or reading newspapers. Even if the Twitter numbers drop there is going to be a large base left behind that will have a great influence on products, services and brands. Brands should not continually jump to the next big thing abandoning the last one but actually maintain campaigns and a presence in each of the services to maintain a global presence. Sure you can throw a media buy of display advertising on those sites as they are probably covered in your network buy and it seems easy enough to do so, but really is that the love that your once shiny social network deserves? Why not rotate unique and innovative campaigns though a couple of those spaces a year. Absolutely make sure that the numbers are there and that the audience falls within your target, that only makes sense. 

Just because the creative team at your agency thinks that the current social network ing or media darling has become dull and tiresome does not mean that it has. Take a good look at the number of active users there and leave no brand loving money spending social networking fellow behind! 



Is the facebook app really dead? For at least six to eight months after the apps launched it seemed like everyone was under savage bombardment of zombie armies attacks and requests for Funwall signups. Yes there was no end of hype over the facebook app phenomenon. From facebook users too the numerous big brands that wanted a facebook app of their very own. It was the talk of the interactive community back in 2007 and early 2008. Clients would usually call me at the agency and ask "We want a facebook app. Can you build us one?" Most of the time the clients never new why they needed it or what a facebook app really was but they knew that it was a "must have". Those days are now gone and I can't even imagine trying to sell an app to a client today. That was only 6 or 7 months ago. Things move so quickly in this interactive world.

What killed the app you ask? Well there are a couple of thing in my opinion that put the death nail into the facebook application platform.

The 18 month attention span with all new shinny things. 

Yes that's right. There is a cycle of consumer interest in any given product or service that lasts approximately 18 moths or so. If you look at the Apple product lifecycle it is just under this at around 14 months, giving about 3-4 months for traction. Also I believe the pet rock was around for roughly the same amount of time back in the 70's.

This summer's much hyped redesign of the facebook profile page that put the apps on a tab somewhere at the back of the page.

There was much hype and noise surrounding the facebook redesign this summer. Some reviews were positive but mostly negative. I myself like the new design and think that the site's usability went way up. One downside for many users and app developers specifically was that the new design pushed the apps to the last tab on the profile page. I did not personally mind as I never really used the apps to begin with. Oh sure I tried them out more for the exploration and insight than anything else. I still have a few apps loaded on my page like Tumblr.com and Lastfm.com but ditched the zombies a long time ago.

The iPhone 3G and it's tremendously popular app store.

Apple's launch of the long awaited iPhone 3G with the apps store coincided with the facebook redesign, 18 month cycle of interest and the finite amount of time that a person has in any given day to dedicate to the Internet. In fact the iPhone facebook app version 2.0 was probably a contributing factor as well. To this day it is in the top 25 most popular apps in the iTunes store. 

To coin an overused phrase it was "the perfect...cough..cough...storm" that killed the facebook app. I have a feeling that a lot of those facebook app developers are now immersed in the iPhone SDK trying to stay afloat.

If the facebook app has been replaced by iPhone app store then what will be after that? Maybe look at the Android platform I hear it is going to be hot!
